Agentic commerce: what UK small businesses should do
When customers let an AI do the shopping
Quick answer: Agentic commerce means AI agents find, compare and buy things on a customer’s behalf. For a UK small business the first job is simple: make your products, prices and policies clear and machine-readable so an agent can recommend you accurately.
What is changing
Until now, people searched, clicked and paid. Increasingly they will ask an assistant: “find me a plumber who can come Thursday under £150” or “order the same coffee as last time”. The assistant then does the work. New standards such as A2A, AP2 and UCP exist to make that safe and consistent.
These standards are new. Nobody knows yet how fast people will adopt them, so be wary of anyone promising certainty.
What agents need from you
- Accurate facts: opening hours, service area, prices, stock.
- Clear policies: returns, delivery, cancellations, in plain text.
- Structured data: schema.org markup on products and services.
- A way to act: a booking or enquiry route an agent can use, such as an A2A endpoint or MCP server.
- Proof of consent: especially for payments. See AP2.
The risks to manage
An agent that can act can also make mistakes. Decide what it may do alone and what needs a person. Keep logs. Check your terms cover orders placed by an agent. Take legal advice on consumer-law points, such as cancellation rights, for your sector.

Frequently asked questions
Is agentic commerce here already?
In early form. Shopping assistants and agent standards exist, but everyday use is still small. Preparing now is cheap; rebuilding later costs more.
Will AI agents replace my website?
No. Agents read your website and your data. A clear, accurate site matters more, not less.
Who is liable if an agent buys the wrong thing?
It depends on the facts and your terms. Signed records of what the customer approved, as in AP2, help. Take legal advice for your sector.
